I too people slowdown in the rising price of gasoline. It has just passed the $ 4 a gallon (about € 1 liter of super) and therefore Americans consume less (compare a 4 years ago or petrol was € 0.40 a liter). The difference with them is that they do not go down in the street protest is more inevitable than anything else. I think they await the arrival of a new president to lift their heads because Bush is still the lowest in the polls and they know that there will be no major economic change before the end of his mandate .
